Addressing active aging & solutions to joint pain with Stratum’s Alexis Collins
We caught up with Alexis Collins, Director of Product and Brand Strategy at Stratum Nutrition to discuss research on sports nutrition and women. Alexis gives us a deep dive into the importance of conducting research at different stages of a women’s life and why that becomes important to delivering meaningful results to female consumers.
Alexis also shares the results of Stratum’s study on NEM including its findings as they relate to mobility, age-related wellness, and nutritional benefits specific to females. She also explains why the findings are important for trainers and dietitians working directly with women as the seek to age actively.
A scroll through the issue of pain & Active Aging
An ingredient to reduce joint pain, hurdles to being active as we age, the specific issues for aging women, a new marker for cartilage degradation…and a chicken.
Joint Pain is a Barrier to Staying Active As We Age.
Aging consumers, traditionally ignored by the fitness industry, make up a large portion of the population. 1
Post-pandemic, 36% of consumers are working out with more regularity, including 29 percent of those over the age of 55 1
this demographic provides an opportunity for the fitness industry…new, older clients.” 1
But who is going to keep moving when it hurts?
One of the top factors most closely related to women becoming sedentary was pain.2
Exercise is already difficult – pain makes it nearly impossible.
Common causes of joint pain:
Osteoarthritis
Old Injuries
Repetitive or Overly Forceful Movements
Inactivity
We have cholesterol, blood pressure, hormone levels, to determine health status but No biomarkers are widely used today that alert us to increasing breakdown of cartilage.
We have to wait for pain.
Enter CTX-II.
CTX-II is a fragment of type II collagen that is an excellent biomarker for cartilage turnover.
Fragments in urine or blood indicate cartilage breakdown.
High CTX-II indicates Cartilage degradation, no rebuilding.
Postmenopausal women: CTX-II substantially higher than age –weight matched premenopausal women – shows a Strong inverse relationship between estrogen and CTX-II.2,3,4
It’s not about the level, but the average change in CTX-II.
stratum’s NEM® reduces exercise-induced joint pain, stiffness, and CTX-II levels
