From Recovery to GLP-1 Era Weight Loss: New Research Highlights Krill Oil’s Role in Muscle Health
Move Nutrition Editor Elyse Lovett and WholeFoods Publisher Heather Wainer speak with Aker BioMarine CEO Matts Johansen about new research exploring krill oil’s role in muscle health during weight loss. In a study designed to mimic the calorie restriction commonly seen with GLP-1 weight-loss therapies, participants on an 800-calorie diet lost similar total weight regardless of supplementation, but muscle loss differed dramatically: about 24% of weight lost was muscle in the placebo group versus roughly 2% in the krill oil group.
Johansen also discusses krill oil’s broader relevance for active nutrition, including its potential anti-inflammatory effects, and research suggesting higher omega-3 status may help athletes recover faster and return to intense training more quickly. The discussion also touches on sustainability efforts in Antarctic krill harvesting and the growing role of science-driven supplements as consumers increasingly research health solutions themselves.
