GLP-1s & The Importance of Maintaining Muscle Health
Ingredient Guide:
Scientifically known as HMB or beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, HMB is one of the most efficient nutritional aids for maintaining muscle mass. While many ingredients simply work to increase muscle protein synthesis, HMB is unique in its dual mechanism of simultaneously increasing muscle protein synthesis while also reducing muscle protein breakdown.
HMB is produced naturally in our bodies during the metabolism of the essential amino acid leucine. While many of HMB’s beneficial effects are shared with leucine, HMB offers more potent muscle retention and recovery benefits because of the additional effect it has on decreasing protein breakdown.
Balancing Weight Management with Muscle Maintenance
Recognized experts at major universities have been conducting HMB research on animals and humans for three decades. In these studies, HMB was found to have several beneficial effects, including producing better results faster from intense exercise. The list of HMB clinical studies is continually growing. There are more than 150 human clinical studies traceable to TSI’s myHMB®, and myHMB® has been discussed in about 100 review articles, and 14 meta-analyses, which have been published as peer-reviewed papers, and there are still more ongoing studies with HMB!
Muscle Health Plays a key role in overall wellness, particularly in the context of weight management
study findings show MyHMB:
Why Does Muscle Health Matter?
There are over 600 muscles in the human body. These muscles are responsible for all movement, much of the body’s metabolic rate, and support of daily living activities. Muscle loss or damage due to aging, illness, injury, or over training can result in a loss of strength and mobility, a lower metabolic rate, and reduced quality of life.
Physical Strength and Mobility
Muscle mass is crucial for physical strength, stability, and mobility. It enables daily activities, from walking and lifting tobalance and posture.
Metabolic Health
Muscle plays a very large role in metabolism as they are responsible for a significant portion of total energy demand. It plays acritical role in glucose homeostasis (largest uptake).
Aging and Longevity
Maintaining muscle mass is vital as we age. Loss of muscle mass, is associated with increased risk of falls, frailty, anddecreased independence in older adults.
Weight Management
Muscles are metabolically active tissues that use calories even at rest. Greater muscle mass can lead to a higher resting metabolicrate, aiding in weight management and proper body composition.
Faster Recovery
Adequate muscle mass is essential for recovery from illness and injury. It provides the necessary strength for rehabilitation.
How much HMB do you need?
The recommended dosage of myHMB (otherwise known as Calcium HMB) is three grams per day for average-size individuals. Research has shown that a more precise dosage of 38 mg of CaHMB per kg, or 17 mg of CaHMB per pound of body weight, each day is optimal (see chart for simplified dosage scale, Strength and Muscle Building: 2000: Gallagher). The daily dosage should be divided into two or three equal servings and taken throughout the day.
For best results, we recommend taking one daily serving of myHMB an hour before exercise or, if you are unable to take myHMB prior to exercise, take a dose immediately after your workout or training session.
myHMB® vs. leucine or protein
In order to benefit from HMB, supplementation is needed. While it is true HMB is naturally produced in our bodies during the metabolism of leucine, only 5% of leucine is converted to HMB in the body. To produce 3 grams of HMB, one would need to consume an inordinate amount of leucine (60g) or protein (600g) – daily.
600 grams of protein = 20 servings or scoops
60 grams of leucine = more than 3 tablespoons
3 grams of HMB = 3 – 1 gram capsules
